Trojan Body Suite worn by inventor Troy Hurtubise

The suit is called Trojan and the inventer describes it as the first ballistic, full exoskeleton body suit of armour and he hopes to get it deployed for Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan and US soldiers in Iraq.

During tests “the suit has stood up to bullets from high-powered weapons, including an elephant gun. The suit was empty during the ballistics tests, but inventor Troy Hurtubise is more than ready to put it on and face live fire.”

It is made from high-impact plastic lined with ceramic bullet protection over ballistic foam. Included in the suit are compartments for emergency morphine and salt, a knife and emergency light. Built into the forearms are a small recording device, a pepper-spray gun and a detachable transponder that can be swallowed in case of trouble.

The whole suit comes in at 40lbs and covers everything but the fingertips and the major joints, In the helmet, there’s a solar-powered fresh-air system and a drinking tube attached to a canteen in the small of the back. A laser pointer mounted in the middle of the forehead is ready to point to snipers, while LED lights frame the face.

The suit could allegedly be mass-produced for about $2,000.”

Carbon Monoxide Alarms Save Lives

November 20, 2009 featured, Fire No Comments
Carbon Monoxide Alarms Save Lives

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, colourless, odourless and tasteless gas. Although it has no detectable odour, (CO) is often mixed with other gases that do have an odour. Therefore you can be inhaling (CO) along with other gases that smell but not realise you are also taking in Carbon Monoxide.

(CO) is a common industrial hazard resulting from the incomplete burning of natural gas and any material containing carbon such as gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane, coal or wood. Forges, blast ovens and coke ovens all produce (CO), but one of the most common sources of exposure in the workplace is the internal combustion engine.

How does Carbon Monoxide harm you?

Carbon Monoxide is harmful when breathed in because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain and other vital organs of oxygen. Large amounts of (CO) can overcome you in minutes, without warning, causing you to lose consciousness and suffocate.

Initial symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning include tightness across the chest, headache, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness and nausea. People with angina may experience sudden chest pain. During prolonged or high exposures, symptoms may worsen and include vomiting, confusion, and collapse in addition to loss of consciousness and muscle weakness. Symptoms vary widely from person to person. (CO) poisoning may occur sooner in those most susceptible for example young children, elderly people, people with heart or lung disease, people living at high altitudes or those who already have elevated Carbon Monoxide blood levels such as smokers. Also, (CO) poisoning poses a special risk to foetuses.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can be reversed if caught in time. But even if you recover, acute poisoning may result in permanent damage to the parts of your body that require a lot of oxygen such as the heart and brain. Significant reproductive risk is also linked to Carbon Monoxide.

Who is at risk?

You may be exposed to harmful levels of (CO) in boiler rooms, breweries, warehouses, petroleum refineries, pulp and paper production, steel production, or working as a Welder, Garage mechanic, Fire fighter, Carbon-black maker, Organic chemical synthesizer, Metal oxide reducer, Diesel engine operator, Forklift operator, Marine terminal worker, Toll booth or tunnel attendant, Customers inspector, Police officer, Taxi driver along with many others working in environments where exhaust gases are present.

What can you do if you suspect someone has been poisoned?

When you suspect Carbon Monoxide poisoning, promptly take the following actions can save lives:

Move the victim immediately to fresh air in an open area.

Call 999 for medical assistance.

Administer 100% oxygen using a tight fitting mask if the victim is breathing.

Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation if the victim has stopped breathing.

Warning: You may be exposed to fatal levels of (CO) in a rescue attempt. Rescuers should be skilled at performing recovery operations and using recovery equipment. Employers should make sure that rescuers are not exposed to dangerous (CO) levels when performing rescue operations.

How can employers help prevent (CO) poisoning?

To reduce the chances of (CO) poisoning in your workplace, you should take the following actions:

Install an effective ventilation system that will remove (CO) from work areas.

Maintain equipment and appliances (water heaters, space heaters, cooking ranges) that can produce (CO) in good working order to promote their safe operation and to reduce (CO) formation.

Consider switching from gasoline powered equipment to equipment powered by electricity, batteries, or compressed air if it can be used safely.

Prohibit the use of gasoline powered engines or tools in poorly ventilated areas.

Provide personal (CO) monitors with audible alarms if potential exposure to (CO) exists.

Test air regularly in areas where (CO) may be present, including confined spaces.

Install (CO) monitors with audible alarms.

Educate workers about the sources and conditions that may result in (CO) poisoning as well as the symptoms and control of (CO) exposure.

In addition if your employees are working in confined spaces where the presence of (CO) is suspected, you must ensure that workers test for oxygen sufficiency before entering.

Run Your business on a Phone?

October 30, 2009 featured No Comments

Can I Run My Security Business From My Phone?

With more and more people running their businesses remotely as they travel round the world, Security Life has been very interested in testing whether it would not only be possible to run your business from a Phone but whether it would be practical.

When this idea was spawned in the minds of the word monkeys at Security Life the original idea was to provide you with a rounded out explanation of how to achieve this on a range of mobile devices. We have looked at devices such as the Palm, Blackberry and new releases from LG and Samsung etc but we found that none of these come close to Apple IPhone in terms of ease of use and availability of quality applications. We will be releasing articles on these other devices in the future.

Phone

This is a basic necessity for any business and the simplest thing to use. IPhone of course have mastered the phone function as well as adding contacts etc

E-mail

E-mail is easy on the IPhone with easy to configure menus so you can link up to Google Mail, Hotmail, or straight from your mail server. When view is switched to the side the on-screen keyboard is surprisingly easy to use making short e-mails a pleasure but longer mails a bit tiresome. Overall E-mail works very well.

Internet & Internet Messaging

The Iphone has to be one of the best mobile devices for surfing the internet on. Pages load very fast and even through 3g are loaded at an acceptable rate. Pinching the screen zooms in on a page so text can be easy to read and links clicked.

Internet messaging using talk programs such as Google Talk and MSN Messenger have become commonplace in most modern offices allowing staff to keep in touch and ping information back and forth. IPhone has numerous applications such as IM+ and Google App that allow you to use this function on your phone. We have found it to be reliable and fun to use and being able to integrate several messaging accounts in to one application keeps you connected to personal and business contacts simultaneously.

Spreadsheets and Documents

Management of documents can be done through numerous online document applications and ones like Google Docs allow you to store the document online without using up valuable storage space on your IPhone. Other ones like Dropbox (http://www.getdropbox.com) allow you to put documents in a folder which can be seen on all your other pc’s. Spreadsheet applications allow you to input data and manipulate it and then export it to wherever you like.

Printing

Printing can be done through a WiFi network or using the Bluetooth function

Practical Applications

Practical applications are numerous for security installers. Whether it be using your IPhone as a spirit level or running a programme that allows you to remotely manage an alarm system having a keypad on your display as if you were standing in front of the actual alarm keypad on site. Using this saves having to call to a site at three o’clock in the morning just to reset an alarm. Remote viewing CCTV is also possible with the correct software.

Data Loss

If you have sensitive data or customer information on your IPhone that you are worried might fall into the wrong hands it is possible to erase information remotely.

So can you use the Apple IPhone to run your security business remotely? The answer seems to be a resounding YES. As long as you’re not expecting the level of usability that you would get from a laptop the IPhone would make the perfect security business partner.
